A Bone Densitometer, specifically utilizing Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA or DXA) technology, is a sophisticated medical imaging device designed for precise measurement of bone mineral density (BMD). Unlike standard X-rays, DEXA technology employs two distinct X-ray beams at different energy levels to differentiate between bone and soft tissue, allowing for a highly accurate assessment of bone mass. This non-invasive procedure provides quantitative data on the calcium and other minerals within specific bone sites, most commonly the hip and lumbar spine.

The primary function of a DEXA scan is to detect osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss by measuring BMD. By comparing a patient's BMD to that of a healthy young adult of the same sex, a T-score is generated. A lower T-score indicates lower bone density, signifying an increased risk of fractures. A Z-score, which compares the patient's BMD to age- and sex-matched individuals, is also used for further assessment.
